Chi Vive Vede Molto, Chi Viaggia Vede Di Più (Those Who Live See a Lot, Those Who Travel See More)

This year, Grand Hotel Miramare celebrates its 120th anniversary. We’ve distilled the past twelve decades into twelve principles that now guide our approach to life. Each principle is a lesson learned from each decade, with our sixth principle below covering 1953 to 1962.

Like many European cities, Santa Margherita Ligure spent the 1950s recovering from the devastation caused by World War II. Reconstruction efforts were swift, with damaged infrastructure repaired or rebuilt.

These efforts - coupled with the town’s natural beauty, charming atmosphere, and proximity to destinations like Portofino and the Cinque Terre - helped Santa Margherita attract tourists from near and far. The Italian Riviera was booming.

Fishing continued to be an essential part of the local economy, but the town was also known for its vibrant cultural and social scene.

Events, art exhibitions, concerts, festivals… Strolling along the promenade, exploring the charming streets, and socialising in the cafés and bars became popular pastimes for travellers. Activities that live on today.

Within our own hotel, the Barracuda Beach Restaurant was becoming a celebrity hotspot. This famous nightclub would host the best Italian jazz orchestras of the day, with the high society of the Italian and French Rivieras mingling under one roof to dance long into the night.

The 1950s really was a decade for travel and tourism, and Grand Hotel Miramare was used both as a base to explore the Italian Riviera, and as a hub for leisure and pleasure.

All of which leads us to our sixth life principle: chi vive vede molto, chi viaggia vede di più. Or in English: those who live see a lot, those who travel see more.

Grand Hotel Miramare has always been an interesting place, for interesting people, to do interesting things.

A spot to experience a new culture, language and set of customs. A setting to connect with others, whether strangers or siblings. And a corner of Italian paradise where you can disconnect from the routine and rigours of everyday life.

In short, a hotel that widens your eyes to life’s colour and character - and that’s always an experience worth travelling for.
